Google closer ties with Apple

Is Google planning to forge closer ties with Apple? There are indications. Google's chief executive Eric Schmidt almost said so when he was asked at a technology conference in San Francisco whether the company is planning to come out with a device to compete with Apple's iPhone.

He said Google and Apple are doing more and more things together and the two companies had similar goals and similar competitors.

Apple TV pushed back until mid-month

Apple has pushed back the release date of its anticipated new tech toy for streaming content from computers to your television set. Apple did not give the reason for the delay of shipments. In January, Apple reported that Apple TV would launch in February, but delayed the shipments of the new product until the middle of this month.

The new product is expected to be another hit for Apple. Already, Apple is popular for its computer, the Macintosh, which is touted at the best of the best by some users. There is the popular brands iTunes and iPod used by millions worldwide and the release of the iPhone even with a high price tag the iPhone will be another huge hit if you base sales projections off of the buzz it has created.

"Wrapping up Apple TV is taking a few weeks longer than we projected, and we now expect to begin shipments mid-March," Apple representative Lynn Fox said in a press statement. The Apple TV is expected to cost about $299. There is a simple three-step process required to use the Apple TV.

On their website, Apple demonstrated these steps in a simple diagram. Users who follow technology news know the Apple TV works on PC and MAC. It is designed to take content from iTunes and play it on your TV. This new product form Apple will add another tie-in and another feature to the already popular iTunes brand.

Solution

If you experience any of the above issues, try the following steps:

1. Toggle the Hold switch. To do this, slide the switch to Hold (an orange bar appears) and then slide it back (orange bar is hidden).
2. Reset the iPod by holding down the Menu and Center buttons for 10 seconds.
* If the Apple logo appears on the display, connect the iPod to a computer and verify that it appears in iTunes and can play music. If the iPod appears in iTunes and can play music, no further troubleshooting is needed.
* If the Apple logo does not appear or the iPod is not seen in iTunes, connect the iPod to a power source by either plugging it into an Apple iPod USB Power Adapter or directly into a computer's USB port.
3. Let the iPod charge for at least 20 minutes. Note: If the iPod is connected to a computer, make sure the computer is not set to sleep, standby, or hibernate.
4. After the iPod has charged for at least 20 minutes and while it is still connected to the power source, toggle the Hold switch again as in step 1.
5. Try resetting the iPod by holding down the Menu and Center buttons for 10 seconds.
* If the Apple logo appears on the display, connect the iPod to a computer and verify that it appears in iTunes and can play music. If the iPod appears in iTunes and can play music, no further troubleshooting is needed.
* If the Apple logo does not appear or the iPod is not seen in iTunes, the iPod should be serviced.

Mike Masnick over at Techdirt picks up the old invention vs. innovation debate and how it applies to the iPhone. So, does that mean that Apple's 200 patents surrounding the iPhone are unnecessary? Or even unjustified?

According to Masnick's line of argument, invention is the process of actually developing something novel and completely new. On the other hand, innovation is the process of taking a new (or existing) technology and making it useful for the public.

Apple under the leadership of Steve Jobs has been a leader in innovation. Apple didn't invent the MP3 player; they just innovated it and made it mainstream. Ditto with the Mac and graphical user interfaces. Apple is incredibly good at making technology chic, easy, and, most importantly, fun-to-use.

So what about those 200 patents? Does Apple's success at innovation give it the right to patent all this innovation of existing technology? Critics of the U.S. intellectual property law system would argue no. They claim that the rewards of the market -- i.e. strong product sales -- are incentive enough.

Others would claim that both inventors and innovators need patents to give them a profit incentive to invent or innovate. Without these patents, competitors would quickly copy the new ideas and steal any reward the industrious pioneers might have seized from their hard work.

Going further, some defenders of the current patent process would go so far to argue that it is nearly impossible to distinguish between invention and innovation, at least from the perspective of the market.

Parts of French ‘iPod Law’ Struck Down

The French Constitutional Council has declared major aspects of the so-called iPod law unconstitutional, undermining some controversial aspects of the legislation.

“ Apple’s lawyers might want to drink a glass of French Champagne today, but not a whole bottle,” said Dominique Ménard, a partner at the Lovells law firm and a specialist in intellectual property. “The Constitutional Council has highlighted fundamental protections for intellectual property in such a way as to put iTunes a little further from risk of the French law.”

Released late Thursday, the council’s 12-page legal finding made frequent reference to the 1789 Declaration on Human Rights and concluded that the iPod law violated the constitutional protections of property.

In particular, the council eliminated reduced fines for file sharing and said companies could not be forced, without compensation, to make music sold online compatible with any music device.

Apple Computer Inc., known for its secrecy about new products, gave the strongest signal yet it's working on an iPod phone that analysts said could be released early next year.

``We don't think that the phones that are available today make the best music players -- we think the iPod is,'' Apple Chief Financial Officer Peter Oppenheimer said on a conference call yesterday. ``But over time that is likely to change and we're not sitting around doing nothing.''

Oppenheimer's comments fueled anticipation that Apple will add a mobile phone to its iPod line. Apple, which has released at least two new models a year to spur sales, last updated the player in October. Growth in IPod shipments has slowed in the past two quarters and analysts anticipate new video and music players in coming months.

``The biggest part of last night's call was the iPhone,'' said Piper Jaffray Co. analyst Gene Munster, based in Minneapolis. ``It was the closest we could get to the announcement of a new product from Apple.''

An iPod phone may be released in the first half of 2007, said Munster. Merrill Lynch & Co. analyst Richard Farmer pegged the release in the first quarter.

Case in point: the big goof not to embrace interoperability from the very start. All the public-relations palaver in the world can't disguise what everyone who uses computers and software already knows--erecting unnecessary technology barriers has benefited only a handful of companies. As the tech business closes in on the 25th anniversary of the original PC from IBM in August, I find it incredible that the industry is still wrestling with this anachronism.

But the tech business is still good for the occasional surprise, such as when Microsoft and Yahoo made good on a pledge to make their instant-messaging services talk to each other. It took long enough, and the launch of a beta test of the system should not be equated with a finished product. Still, it is a harbinger of a different computing universe, where about 350 million Microsoft and Yahoo users will be able to message each other, adding buddies from either service to their contacts lists.

Disney to Make 4 ABC Shows Free Online

The Walt Disney Co. said Monday its TV group plans to offer four ABC prime-time shows including "Desperate Housewives" and "Lost" online for free beginning in May.

The offerings will also include current episodes of "Commander in Chief," as well as the entire season of "Alias," and will be available through June.

The shows, being offered by the Disney-ABC Television Group, will be supported by advertisers, including AT&T Inc., Ford Motor Co., Procter & Gamble Co., Toyota Motor Corp. and Unilever PLC, among others.

The TV group also said it will launch a broadband channel for soap opera viewers on April 17, available to Verizon Communications Inc. consumer broadband customers, called Soapnetic.

Rural college pushes iPod use for lectures

But here in the antebellum capital of Georgia, students listening to iPods might just as well be studying for calculus class as rocking out to Coldplay -- after the school's educators worked to find more strategic uses for the popular digital music and video players.
At least 100 of the rural school's employees are turning iPods into education or research tools -- impressive for a college with only about 300 faculty. But it's more than simply making class lectures available -- a practice now routine at many colleges and even a few high schools.
History professor Deborah Vess asks students to download 39 films to their video-capable iPods so she doesn't have to spend class time screening the movies. Psychology professor Noland White has found a new-age answer to office hours: a podcast of the week's most asked questions.
And the 5,500-student campus has organized a group of staff and faculty to conjure up other uses for the technology. Called the iDreamers, the team bats around ideas that could turn iPods into portable yearbooks and replace campus brochures with podcasts.
"The more you free up your classroom for discussion, the more efficient you are," said Dorothy Leland, the school's president.
Campuses throughout the nation have transformed the gadgets into education tools, a trend iPod maker Apple Computer Inc. hopes to capitalize on with "iTunes U," a nationwide service that makes lectures and other materials available online. And GCSU isn't the only school that wants the music players to be more than just a tool for catching up on missed lectures.
At North Carolina's Duke University, where incoming freshmen have been handed the devices as welcoming gifts, foreign language students use iPods to immerse themselves in coursework.
Administrators at Pennsylvania's Mansfield University want to use podcasts -- broadcast messages that can be downloaded to iPods and other players -- to recruit high schoolers to the 3,000-student campus. The school also used a podcast to address student and faculty concerns after a New York man who had contracted anthrax visited campus with a dance troupe.
Yet few campuses have embraced the new technology as doggedly as GCSU, which was rewarded for its iPod ingenuity when it was chosen to host Apple's Digital Campus Leadership Institute in November.
The school has been a leader in "integrating the iPod into the curriculum to enhance teaching and learning in creative ways going all the way back to the original iPod," said Greg Joswiak, Apple's vice president of iPod product marketing.
After Leland and Jim Wolfgang, the school's chief information officer, began seeing iPods around campus in 2002, they decided to explore educational applications for the devices. They started by farming out 50 donated iPods to faculty who offered the best proposals.
Soon Wolfgang's office was flooded with applications from educators suggesting new uses. Now some 400 college-owned iPods are floating around campus -- some loaned to students in certain classes, others available for checkout at libraries.
The iPods run the technology gamut, from the bulky first-generation devices to the latest video-capable models.
Hank Edmondson, a government professor known around campus as "The Podfather," was among the first to use iPods to supplement his course lectures. Edmondson now makes lectures, language study programs, indigenous music and thumbnail art sketches available for download to the iPods of students in a three-week study-abroad program he leads.
During a recent visit to the Prado in Madrid, he recorded a 20-minute lecture on the museum's artwork. Downloading it in advance will let students spend their time at the museum exploring, not listening to Edmondson talk.
"You want to pack everything in, but you've got a lot of travel time," he said.
Vess said having her history students screen films on their iPods allows her to dedicate class time to discussion and analysis. Ditto for the weekly graduate course on historical methods that she teaches.
"Now I can devote my whole three hours to Socratic dialogue," she said with a grin.
While iPods can be useful tools for reviewing coursework, some critics argue donning a pair of earphones is not the same as actively engaging with material in a classroom.
"Learning is through interaction, discussion, critical questioning and challenging of assumptions," said Donna Qualters, director of the Center for Effective Teaching at Northeastern University in Boston. "Those cannot be duplicated on an iPod -- you have to be there to experience that learning."
GCSU officials say the school makes sure its iPod lessons supplement classroom work.
"We don't have any project that repeats what's going on in the classroom," Wolfgang said. "All this is value-added."
He said the school's iPod ingenuity is helping promote GCSU's decade-old effort to remake itself as Georgia's only public liberal arts college. Long a school that attracted a regional crowd of students who often left for other schools after a year, Wolfgang believes the focus on iPods is helping retain more students.
This school year, it started iVillage, a virtual community that encouraged incoming students to start communicating before the start of classes. The first dozen freshmen recruited for the effort were asked to think up innovative uses for the iPods.
The team is creating an iPod-based freshmen survival guide that includes advice on classes, dorms and nightlife in this sleepy community 100 miles south of Atlanta.
Bobby Jones, a freshman from Rome, said he's found life in a "virtual community" surprisingly satisfying.
"(You) think it will never get the same sense of community living together, but we definitely found that sense of belonging," he said.

Analyst: Apple's 60-gig iPod 'at risk'

Apple may be phasing out its 60-gigabyte Video iPod, according to one analyst who tracks the company.
The company has told its distributors that the 60-gigabyte iPod, which launched in October and retails for $399, is "at risk" until the end of April, meaning that it could be discontinued or replaced, according to Shaw Wu, an analyst for American Technology Research,

Wu does not own shares of Apple (down $0.94 to $63.05, Research), and his firm does not do banking business with the company.
In a note to clients, Wu said he believes the company is readying a wide-screen video iPod with Bluetooth headphones that could be ready as early as the June quarter. The analyst said his checks indicate that Apple is working on such a product.
Rumors of a wide-screen video iPod have swirled since earlier this year when the Apple rumor site Think Secret reported that Apple was working on a new video iPod.
The new device reportedly has a screen that covers the entire face of the iPod and a "virtual click wheel" that appears only when a user touches the screen. The design resembled a patent that Apple recently filed for a tablet computer.

Movies for your iPod

Last week the first full length movie was released on iTunes. The movie was first found on iTunes at $1.99 and was later removed. The file was then re-released at $9.99 available in iTunes currently. The community feedback was positive at $1.99 but once witch to $9.99 there was a bug push back on pricing. The movie is a made for TV type of movie. It may be some time yet before movies from any of the Major studios appear in iTunes.

This could be nothing more that a test of what the market is willing to pay for a full length movie. Will the $10 price be the going rate for a downloadable movie in iTunes? Don’t know but anything more than that is going to be too much. I would like to see something more around the $7 range. Since a standard DVD movie is in the $15-20 range for most new release movies. With less work and packaging needed to release the movie in iTunes, I would hope that they might pass the savings on to the consumer.

Now if we could get movies released in iTunes before they are released in DVD format would be something that I would be willing to purchase. Being a parent of young children our movie going escapades are pretty much limited to cartoons and kids movies. While these movies are decent stories with great visuals, I still need my action and horror movies. I hate waiting the couple of months for the release to become available on DVD. If this time can be shortened at all, I will be first in line to download.

You can replace the iPod's battery yourself.

Problems with the iPod's battery became big news when an underground video, "iPod's Dirty Secret" was posted on the Web in late 2003. The video detailed New York artist Casey Neistat's claim that his iPod battery wouldn't hold a charge and Apple wouldn't fix it, suggesting instead that he buy a new iPod. The video, which cost $40 to make, got over a million hits and spawned stories in the Washington Post, and on Fox News and CBS.

TV downloads break new barrier with 'Scrubs' deal

The NBC hospital comedy, produced by Disney-ABC Television Group's Touchstone Television, has been added to the catalog of shows that can be purchased as a download from Apple Computer's iTunes music store for $1.99 per episode.

While TV series for network broadcast are routinely produced by and licensed from studios of competing media companies, the "Scrubs" deal marks the first such partnership for a prime-time program offered via the Internet for commercial download, NBC and ABC said Wednesday.

Until now, programs made available for online purchase, like ABC's "Desperate Housewives" and NBC's "The Office," have all been productions of their respective "in-house" television studios.

The iTunes inventory of network shows has grown to more than 60 programs since Apple struck a first landmark deal with ABC in October 2005 to provide commercial-free downloads of some of the Disney-owned network's biggest hits for $1.99.

The advent of downloadable TV launched a new revenue stream for broadcasters and a new era of digital portability for consumers, enabling them to play some of their favorite shows anywhere, any time, on video-equipped models of Apple's wildly popular iPod device.

However, the selection of shows that networks were ready to offer for downloads was limited by questions over how they would share revenues on programs produced by third-party TV studios--a quandary resolved by the "Scrubs" deal.

Apple lets parents 'turn that garbage down'

Apple Computer Inc., facing complaints and a lawsuit claiming the popular player can cause hearing loss, made the setting available as part of a new software update Wednesday. The free download applies to the iPod Nano and the iPod models with video-playback capabilities.

Parents also can use the feature to set a limit on their child's iPod and lock it with a code, the company added. (Full story)

"As the leading provider of digital music players, Apple continuously brings iPod customers innovative and easy to use solutions," Greg Joswiak, Apple's vice president for iPod marketing, said in a statement. "With the increased attention in this area, we want to offer customers an easy to use option to set their own personal volume limit."

Earlier this year, a Louisiana man filed a lawsuit against Apple, claiming that the iPod can cause hearing loss in people who use it. (Watch Apple faces The Beatles in court -- 2:17)

The devices can produce sounds of more than 115 decibels, a volume that can damage the hearing of a person exposed to the sound for more than 28 seconds per day, according to the complaint filed in U.S. District Court in San Jose, California.

Although the iPod is more popular than other types of portable music players, its ability to cause hearing loss isn't any higher, experts said.

Apple ships a warning with each iPod that cautions "permanent hearing loss may occur if earphones or headphones are used at high volume."

Apple cell phone guessing game

Will Apple computer be adding a cell phone to their product stable? This along with how was the universe created may go down as one of the most talked about questions. Well maybe not but there are plenty of iPod users wondering about it. Will they, how will they and do people even want one are some of the biggest questions floating around. Each time Apple makes an announcement for a special event this subject rises up and speculation grows.

Well Apple has partnered with Motorola on the Rokr and Slvr phones over the last several months with very little success. Motorola created these phones and worked with Apple to get iTunes onto them. This would allow users to put up to 100 songs from their iTunes library onto the phone. Well to start 100 songs is not a lot of music. This would put the phone in the same class as an iPod shuffle but with a color display. The price of these phones is floating around the $200 price point. This is a pretty step price to pay for a basic phone with limited song storage.

There has been talking as of late that the 100 song limit is a software limit and that it might be expanded soon. This would allow for more songs to be placed on the phone, which might attract a few more people. Another downfall is that the phone is just now that cool looking. It’s a basic candy bar style of phone and pretty dull looking compared to the RAZR.

I think that Apple probably will do something more in the phone area someday. My best guess is that you’re not going to get some basic phone with iTunes on it. The Motorola experiment is just that, an experiment to see how the market would react. If Apple wants to do something special like they have so many times before, I would suggest creating a Newton phone. That’s right bring back the Newton, updated of course. This would be a PDA style phone with palm type features, able to store large amounts of data, music and compete with the Treo style phones. If Apple does this I am sure it would be a huge hit. The Newton still has a fairly large following and they could blend the products together to make something cool.

For now we’ll just have to keep reading the rumor mills and wait for that next big announcement from Steve.

Swan song for an iPod

Death, if we're so lucky, comes in the waning years of one's life. It would arrive with little suffering, as painless as closing your eyes and entering a deep sleep.

Some of us aren't so lucky. My iPod wasn't. It suffered. And I cried a thousand tears.

On Monday, Feb. 28, 2006, at approximately 4:10 p.m., my 20-gigabyte, special-edition U2 black-and-red iPod died. No warnings, no goodbyes. It happened as I exercised on the elliptical machine at the gym. Its last words were: You're seeing the world through cynical eyes ... ("All Possibilities," by Badly Drawn Boy). Then the screen froze.

For us, the fiercely loyal 42 million iPod owners worldwide, this is our worst nightmare realized.

As the elliptical machine in the gym came to a stop, I held down the menu and select buttons to reset the iPod. A folder with an exclamation point popped up, with a Web address for Apple Support. I reset the iPod once more, and the same screen came up, followed by a whirring sound, like it was crying.

And then, for a moment, I coaxed some psychic echoes from the player -- a few scraps of songs -- only to have my hopes dashed. Freeze. Whirr. Nothing.

The bus ride home that evening was the longest 15 minutes of my life.

Have you ever lost a childhood pet? That's how it feels right now. You don't appreciate it until it's gone, and then you think about all the good times you've shared.

One time, I jogged along the lakeshore with Outkast blaring its Deep South brand of hiphop. I never ran so far and so long in my life. There's the time my desk mates at work were yapping about this, that and the other. I slipped on the white ear buds, thumbed the click wheel clockwise to turn up the volume and let the outside world drown in a sea of Coldplay.

That iPod has helped me get in shape, making the treadmill less of a chore. It has helped me ignore both panhandlers and Greenpeace volunteers. It is my lucky rabbit's foot, my medulla oblongata, the wind beneath my wing. Did it ever know it was my hero?

Those memories flooded back as I walked into the Apple Store on Michigan Avenue the next day. The man at the counter held the iPod to his ear, listening to its inside. The same whirring sound came up. And then, with as much sympathy as diagnosing a hangnail, he told me: "You've got hard drive failure." My stomach sank.

He explained several options. Apple could fix the iPod, but that would likely cost more than the actual device itself. I could take it to a third-party repairer, but that would involve mailing my iPod away to strangers, for days and possibly weeks.

His last suggestion, the one he gave the most enthusiastic pitch for, was for me to buy a brand-new iPod. The new one has a screen in color, it holds more songs, and it plays videos! Awesome! I walked out.

In the week since the death of my iPod, I've been lumbering around with this unwieldy apparatus called a portable CD player, a device I purchased more than a decade ago. Besides the fact it only plays a dozen songs at a time, doesn't really work while jogging and requires four fresh AA batteries every other week, it still works like a charm. Hmmmm.

I now ponder the $299 question. As much as I question the worthiness of a new video iPod (under my previous, $350, special-edition iPod's lifeline, it worked out to $21.81 a month), I'm resigned that it's not a matter of if, but when I'll buy a new one. But there's something about ol' Poddy I can't let go -- the scuff marks, the way it contours in my hands, the arresting red click wheel. But then I remembered ...

When I was younger, I found my pet goldfish floating lifeless on the surface one morning. After it went round and round down the porcelain grave, my parents bought a new goldfish from the pet store that same day. I could barely tell the difference.

Congratulations! You've won a lower price on a new iPod. Apple Computer has introduced a new version of its svelte iPod nano that sells for $50 less than the least expensive nano previously available.

A 1-gigabyte nano capable of holding as many as 240 songs will cost you $149, compared with a 2-gigabyte, 500-song model priced at $199. Apple also cut the price on both versions of its screen-less iPod shuffle. The 1-gigabyte model, formerly $129, now costs $99, and the 512-megabyte shuffle, which used to cost $99, is now priced at $69.

Apple also said Showtime programming including ``Weeds'' and ``Fat Actress'' will be available for downloading on its iTunes store (which is great, because I've been wanting to check out both shows, but not so much that I'm willing to give Comcast even more money every month). Our Apple writer, John Boudreau, has details on both announcements.

In a move that would have been unthinkable in the days when Microsoft ruled the personal-computer world, PC maker Dell confirmed that it's testing software from Mountain View Internet giant Google and may pre-install the software on its computers. Dell spokesman Jess Blackburn told Bloomberg News that the test includes the Google Toolbar, Google desktop search and a Google-powered Dell home page.

The news was first disclosed this morning in the Wall Street Journal, which reported that Google may pay Dell as much as $1 billion in the next three years, apparently in an effort to attract even more traffic and online advertising dollars.

``Google is desperate for new revenue streams,'' Matt Rosoff, an analyst at Directions on Microsoft, told Bloomberg. ``It's definitely something Microsoft is concerned about and is worried about.''

ince Apple Computer Inc.'s video iPod made its debut less than four months ago, users have been able to download their favorite TV shows free from ads. Now, advertisers are scrambling for a way to subvert the sleek device for their own purposes.

Some companies are attaching recycled TV spots to the beginning of video files, or podcasts, that can be downloaded from popular Web sites. Others are creating new, subtler pitches to bracket shows attractive to their target audiences. And still others are creating their own podcasts that blur the line between entertainment and advertisement in hopes of enticing people to watch the commercials for their own sake.

"It's a lot of trial and error," says Liz Vanzura, global marketing director for General Motors Corp.'s Cadillac division.

Video iPods and other hand-held devices such as cell phones have made entertainment portable, with people able to watch episodes of selected programs and other pieces of content at their convenience. The problem is that Apple offers its paid content ad-free on iTunes, including hit TV shows such as "Lost" and "Desperate Housewives," forcing marketers to find new ways to deliver their messages to viewers of other video content available online. Call it advertising on the go.

"It's a real challenge," says Marlene Coulis, vice president for brand management at Anheuser-Busch. On TV and other traditional types of media, ads are jammed into the middle of shows. When it comes to iPod ads, advertisers are being careful not to become so intrusive as to turn off would-be viewers.

Although marketers are eager to experiment, many are struggling to figure out what ad content is appropriate for the iPod. Some companies, such as Nintendo Co., have taken tentative steps. The videogame maker has reused 15-second TV commercials for its "Mario Kart DS" at the beginning of video podcasts on GrindTV.com, a unit of Los Angeles-based PureVideo Inc. The spots appear at the beginning of two-minute short surfing films such as "Triple Crown Big Pipeline" and "Girls of the North Shore."

Tracey Scheppach -- video innovation director at Publicis Groupe SA's Starcom, the media-buying unit responsible for Nintendo's iPod push -- says that over time advertisers will have to move beyond simply repurposing TV campaigns. "Advertisers have to free themselves from the 30-second ad," adds Ms. Scheppach.

GM's Hummer division has appended 15-second ads for the beefy SUV, to the beginning and end of a video podcast that shows what went on backstage at GQ magazine's star-studded party hyping its "Men of the Year" issue. The car maker crafted special 15-second clips, and tried to give them a different feel than television commercials. Opening with the Hummer H3 logo, the clips simply show a vehicle driving on an urban highway and through the mountains. The screen reads: "Hummer like nothing else." There is no mention of sticker price. "It's not about hard-sell on the iPod," says Vanzura, who helped develop the campaign when she was marketing director for Hummer.

CES 2006 Coverage: More iPod Accessories Debut

As if we haven't seen enough iPod accessories already, CES presented a host of new companies (and old ones) with new and updated product lines exclusively for the iPod.

We asked companies if they were gambling the market by offering extensive iPod exclusive products and what would happen should the iPod's value decline. Though Apple is the largest MP3 player seller with record sales quarter after quarter, its marketshare has trickled down over time. Due to this, Apple's competitors, including Creative, Sony and a number of others, felt relived this year, since they now had a chance to capture the market that Apple had lost.

Creative was perhaps one of the only companies that's concentrating on making "actual" products and matching accessories at the same time. Majority of the other companies are focusing on the iPod exclusively. We asked Altec Lansing and Kensington the kind of sales figures they were noticing with their iPod accessories, and if iPod users were really spending more on the accessories than they did on the device itself. We got surprising answers. While neither company gave us specific sales figures, they did say that iPod users are in fact spending thousands more on additional accessories to enhance their experience with the iPod.

Despite stiff competition, the demand is there for multiple companies to co-exist with iPod exclusive products.

Mercedes-Benz was one of the first automakers to offer iPod integration.

Less than two years after introducing its first partnership with an automaker (see "Apple at the Wheel" timeline at right), Apple (Research) has made iPod integration the hottest new car option for 2006.

With Sunday's announcement that Chrysler (Research), Dodge, and Jeep vehicles will feature iPod connectors, 16 auto brands now offer accessories that let you plug your iPod into your car's audio system.

Apple estimates that 40 percent of cars sold in the U.S. this year will offer iPod integration.

Some iPod-ready autos put iPod-like playback controls right on the steering wheel or instrument panel, with the built-in stereo displaying the name of the current track.

Acura plans to let drivers command an iPod through a voice-recognition system. Simpler accessories offered by automakers broadcast the iPod's audio signal to a car's FM radio.

The "iPod tax"
For automakers, this seamless integration comes at a cost. Apple exerts tight control over accessories for its music player through its "Made for iPod" licensing program. Dashboard integration with the iPod requires the ability to plug into the iPod's special dock connector -- and that, in turn, requires a license from Apple.

"Made for iPod" may be quite lucrative for Apple, with accessory makers reportedly paying 10 percent of the wholesale price of their wares for a license. Some observers have dubbed the license charge an "iPod tax." Apple has said that the license helps reassure accessory makers that the technical specs of the iPod dock won't change, rendering their products obsolete. In any event, Steve Jobs & co. could end up with a considerable revenue stream: Phil Magney, principal analyst at Telematics Research Group, estimates that 400,000 iPod-specific car audio accessories were sold in 2005 -- worth between $750 million and $1.5 billion at wholesale -- and he expects the market to grow to 6.8 million units by 2010.

How does Steve Jobs manage to have such influence over the proud auto chieftains of Detroit, Stuttgart, and Tokyo?

First of all, there's the runaway success of the iPod, with 42 million sold to date and 14 million sold in just the past three months. Sheer numbers have made the iPod a must-have auto accessory, and the iPod tax a small price to pay.

Telematics Research Group forecasts that by 2011, 28 million autos in the U.S. and 73 million autos worldwide will have iPod integration, up from just under a million last year.

Third-party options
"iPod integration is still a cool feature," says Brian Moody, Road Test editor at Edmunds.com. "It's not yet expected." In three to five years, he says, it might become standard.

In the meantime, he expects most automakers will introduce audio-input jacks that let drivers plug any sort of MP3 player into the car stereo. (Audio inputs, while compatible with any player, don't let drivers use steering-wheel controls to control music playback or volume, or see the current track on the stereo display.)

For those looking to hook up an older car or a 2006 model that doesn't yet have an iPod kit, there are a host of third-party options.

The simplest include FM broadcasters and cassette adapters, which feed the iPod's audio output to the car stereo. The most advanced include displays for playing downloaded iPod videos, with inputs for multiple high-tech devices -- satellite and HD radio and DVD players as well as for the iPod. Alpine, Clarion, and Pioneer are some of the biggest firms in the iPod-auto accessory business.

From appliqué crystals to functional peripherals, more than 400 iPod accessories are on the market. NPD Group, a marketing-analysis firm, estimates consumers will spend $500 million in 2005 on iPod accessories, not including speakers and headphones.

Kristin Cecchettini, 24, is one of them.

"It's been a life-changing experience for me, which sounds ridiculous, but it's true," she says of the 40-GB iPod she got about 1½ years ago. "I got into all of the accessories as part of wanting to have it with me all the time."

Cecchettini started with functional accessories such as the iTrip ($34.95) so she could listen to her iPod through her car radio. Then she moved to fashion. She now has two Kate Spade covers, a J. Crew case, several protective cases known as "skins" and an armband to wear while she's jogging. She's spent about $450 on iPod accessories.

"After reaching the ripe, metabolism-destroying age of 40, I decided that it was time to incorporate an exercise routine into my daily life. So I packed my gym bag with the necessary clothing, shoes, reading material, and, of course, my trusty 3G iPod.

I realized very quickly during my very first workout that my iPod was awkward to simply carry (especially in sweaty hands), and setting it on the little reading shelf of a cardio machine was a dangerous idea. At the very least, it could easily fall off. It became apparent that a case of some kind was necessary. In my search for the perfect gym iPod case, I have been disappointed numerous times, and I have yet to find the right combination of form, function, and comfort.

At first I had a waist pack to house my iPod. This was convenient because I could also carry my keys, some lip balm, and my headphones. The belt of the pack was also a nice place to hang my gym towel. However, I found that it got in the way when using a rowing machine or recumbent bike, and it would irritatingly bounce around when I was on the treadmill.

I then got a basic holster-style belt-clip for my iPod. It keeps the iPod controls accessible; however again, it interfered with recumbent bicycling and rowing, because the iPod was sitting right where my legs needed to bend at my waist. Also, many of my workout pants don't have a belt to speak of and the iPod clip often slipped loose, sending the iPod flying, holster and all.

More searching found the Marware SportSuit Sleeve neoprene case that not only had a removable belt clip, but it also sported a small loop on the back in case I wanted to hang my iPod around my neck. This offered my iPod considerably more protection from impact (as well as moisture). However, if I wanted to adjust the volume, switch playlists, or otherwise change any of the iPod settings, I would have to unplug the headphones completely in order to open the Velcro flap closure and take the iPod completely out of the case. This was not an easy thing to do while working out on a Precor elliptical trainer, and I often ended up juggling my iPod around in an attempt to not drop it, or nearly losing my balance and falling off of the exercise machine. I also found that using the lanyard loop, although better than a belt clip, made my iPod bang against my sternum incessantly during any sort of cardio workout.

My next attempt was an Xtrememac arm band case, with a see-through window for getting to the iPod controls. At first, I thought that my search was over...but soon after beginning my workout, I realized that my sweat was making the neoprene arm band stretch just a bit, and the case began slipping down my arm. I tightened the Velcro closures, and within fifteen minutes of working out on the elliptical trainer, I felt my arm start to throb as if I was having my blood pressure tested, and my fingertips went numb and began to turn blue. Fearing an brain-bound armpit blood clot, I quickly took the armband off and hung it on the handrail of the machine. Shortly after that I went to adjust the volume on my iPod, and found that the plastic window had stuck to the front of my iPod, rendering the touch-wheel virtually useless.

Beating the iPod Crunch

With the holiday shopping season at hand, two truths are swiftly emerging about Apple's iPod digital-music player. First, the product is going to be a gigantic hit. Second, there are going to be shortages.

The only question is how big the shortfall will be. Some retailers contacted by BusinessWeek Online say they're getting far fewer iPods than they requested -- in two cases, fewer than half of their weekly orders. Also, retailing giant Circuit City (CC) expects demand to outstrip supply through the end of the year, though a spokesman wouldn't say to what degree. And Apple Computer's (AAPL) announcement that it would invest $1.2 billion to lock up supply of flash-memory chips from suppliers -- including a new, three-year joint venture between Intel (INTC) and Micron Technology -- has some analysts worried about its ability to make enough iPods to satisfy runaway demand in the near term before additional capacity comes online. Indeed, Toshiba (TOSBF) Chief Executive Atsutoshi Nishida says that "unfortunately, we're not able to satisfy 100% of Apple's requirements" for flash chips.

DRM company vows to hack iTunes DRM

A California DRM company has vowed to crack the iTunes DRM so that they can sell a product that allows other DRM companies to make songs that play on iPods.

iTunes DRM makes it potentially illegal to make a song that is locked and yet will play on an iPod (why anyone would want a locked song is another matter -- do online music store customers actually desire technology that locks them out of their own music?).
Navio Systems promises to reverse-engineer the iTunes DRM format and offer it to Apple's competitors, who will then be able to able to lock their music with Apple's restrictive software and then offer it for use on iPods (they can presently offer music that plays on the iPod by offering the music in MP3 form, which iPods can also play). With its introduction in January of TiVoToGo, the digital video recording pioneer gave its broadband Series2 subscribers the ability to transfer recorded shows to Windows-based PCs and laptops as well as portable media players. iPods to support copy-protected CDs? EMI said what

The EMI Group record label said music from its copy-protected CDs will soon play on Apple Computer's iPod digital music players, but the iPod maker disagrees.

For more than a year, the anti-copying technology loaded on some major label compact discs has been compatible only with Windows-based computers. Those CDs have allowed listeners to move digital files onto the computers, but they have not been able to transfer those songs to iPods.

EMI's upcoming copy-protected CDs, which will use technology from Macrovision, and will at last be compatible with iPods, a change nearly a year in the making, the label said.

"Apple is nearly finished with the technical work necessary to enable consumers to transfer music from content-protected discs to their iPods," the label said in a statement detailing its copy-protection plans. "This is an important step for EMI and Apple, but even more so for music consumers who will soon be able to legitimately port music from protected discs they own to the iPod." Full Story

However, Apple disputed EMI's characterization of its plans.

"The information EMI provided regarding iTunes and iPod compatibility with Macrovision's technology is not true and we have no idea why EMI made this statement," Apple said in a statement.

Review: Altec Lansing inMotion iM5

It wasn’t long ago that Altec Lansing’s original inMotion, and later the $180 inMotion iM3, dominated the portable iPod speaker market. These systems were the first to provide decent sound quality in small packages with built-in iPod docks; the iM3 even included a wireless remote control.

Would You Pay $300 to Outfit Your iPod?

But having the pricey player may no longer be enough. This fall, couture designers from Chanel to Marc Jacobs are offering cases in calfskin, signature canvas, you name it -- sometimes at more than US$300 a pop.

But is the average MP3 junkie ready to dish out more for a posh case than for the player itself?

Shifting Market
"Over the last year or two, the market has shifted on iPod cases," says Dean Constantine of Weston, Fla.-based XtremeMac, a third-party manufacturer of iPod accessories available worldwide. "It used to be that protection for the iPod was the most important thing. ... Leather cases that provide padding and soft interior materials were what people craved. Now, people just want something stylish, and many own multiple cases for their iPods."

As a result, Constantine says, designers are going after a different breed of shopper.

"Their target market is a fashionista who owns an iPod," Constantine says. "I doubt that people who wouldn't normally buy Coach or Kate Spade items would shell out $100 to $300 for an iPod case made by them. On the other hand, the Coach addicts out there will absolutely shelve their existing $30 leather case and run out to buy the new Coach case."

From Kate Spade to Dior
IPods range in price from $99 for the 512 MB shuffle, which holds 120 songs, to $399 for the Mac daddy 60 GB player, which holds 15,000 songs. Designer-case costs include $55 for a leather wristlet case from Kate Spade and $230 for the Black Tie iPod case by Christian Dior.

According to Newsweek, fashion powerhouse Karl Lagerfeld stores his personal music collection among 60 iPods (at last count), each laser coded to tell what tunes are inside. On a runway in Milan last year, he showed his affinity for the players by unveiling the $1,500 Fendi Juke Box, a bread-box-sized bag built to carry 12 iPods.

"I don't know anyone who has [a designer iPod case], but I think anything fun and designer is worth the big bucks," says Melissa Payne, a 22-year-old University of Florida (UF) senior. "If you have the money, why not get one?"

Payne says she has shopped for Gucci's Guccisima iPod case ($235) on eBay (Nasdaq: EBAY) , but hasn't found one at the right price from a trusted dealer. "I personally wouldn't buy one [at full retail price], because that's how much my iPod cost -- $200," Payne says.

Keeping It Simple
UF professor and iPod enthusiast David Carlson says that among his students and colleagues, the most popular MP3 player accessories are simple cases -- for protection and for clipping the player to a belt or armband -- and upgraded headphones. "I think there also are a lot of people who have FM transmitters they use in the car. I installed a jack in my car so I can plug right in."

Carlson hasn't seen any couture iPod accessories in his classrooms, he says, though he admits he might not know a Gucci from a Pucci.

At Pine Crest School in Boca Raton, Fla., however, trendy accessories are in no short supply -- especially iPods.

"In about March or April, I started seeing more and more of them after school, at the mall, on school trips and at the gym," says Jacqueline Cox, an eighth grader at Pine Crest. "Most people get them for their birthdays, holidays, or as graduation or end-of-year presents from their parents."

Cox agrees that cases are a must, but she says most of her friends have cases sold at Mac stores, online or in other electronics stores.

Out of the Ordinary
Constantine says designer iPod cases are typically not sold where iPods are sold, which he says "dramatically lowers the connect rate" for potential buyers.

"I have seen a couple designer iPod cases at school, but not very many because they can be even more expensive than the iPod itself," says Cox, 13. "I have seen them advertised in magazines and have seen them in stores. But none of my friends would buy an expensive designer case, because we all know that there are ones that are just as cute and protect just the same for a tenth of the price."

iPod Thumbs down for iPod ailment

TENNIS players have their elbows, housemaids have their knees and athletes have their feet. Now users of the world's most popular digital music player may have their own affliction - iPod thumb.

The condition is reportedly caused by the repetitive hand movements required when listeners use a wheel device on the player to navigate through lists of songs and artists.

Music fans may enjoy the ability to spool through 10,000 songs on their iPods, but medical experts warn that jumping from tune to tune has its risks.

Carl Irwin, from the British Chiropractic Association, said: "This is a really serious problem. The action needed to move the wheel on an iPod is totally unnatural and effectively separates the joint in the thumb every time you use it.

"This causes inflammation in the thumb or fingers and can be very painful. We have also seen cases of iPod users where the problem has spread to their elbow and neck."

Mr Irwin said he expected to see a rise over the next six months of patients complaining of symptoms typical of repetitive stress injury (RSI). Children using their players for extended periods could be storing up problems for adulthood as their joints were still growing, he added.

Apple, the maker of the iPod, has refused to comment on the warning. The company also faces pressure from American health experts who share the same concern over potential RSI risks.

Donna Stanton, of the US Society of Hand Therapists, said: "Hand-held electronics may require prolonged grips, repetitive motion on small buttons and awkward wrist movements. This combination can lead to hand, wrist and arm ailments such as carpal tunnel syndrome and tendinitis. These devices are getting smaller with even more features, which encourage heavy, extended use. More of the population could suffer hand ailments unless they learn to take preventative measures."

Apple preps major update to Genius Bar reservation system

Apple Computer next week will launch a major update to the Genius Bar reservation system used by customers wishing to schedule an appointment for technical support or service at its many retail stores, AppleInsider has learned.

The new system, expect to be called "Concierge," will aim to streamline the reservation and repair process at Apple's stores, reducing the time customers have to wait before they can speak face-to-face with an Apple Genius, sources with ties to the company's retail division have revealed.

Motorola set to release Razr with iTunes loaded

Motorola announced four upcoming Razr handsets on Tuesday, including one that comes preloaded with Apple's iTunes music software.

The Razr V3i is expected to hit shelves before the end of the year. It includes a 1.23-megapixel digital camera with 8x digital zoom, video capture and a full-screen viewfinder.

The handset will also ship with a hot swappable memory card, 65K-color support on the display and integrated Bluetooth wireless capability.

Pricing is expected to depend on the carrier, which Schaumburg, Ill.-based Motorola has not yet revealed. The Razr V3i will be the second mobile handset to feature Apple's iTunes software. Motorola's Rokr phone also includes access to iTunes.

Motorola will also ship a new Razr V3c using CDMA wireless standard Ev-DO (Evolution Data Only, Evolution Data Optimized) networks. The handset has several of the same features as the Razr V3i, with a camera upgrade to 1.3-megapixels.

Both newer handsets are expected to tap into a recent momentum at Motorola, which has reported strong sales of its popular clamshell-style Razr handset since its debut last year. Motorola continues to be the second largest handset-supplier worldwide behind Nokia.

According to market researcher The NPD Group, Motorola accounted for 30 percent of the 31.6 million handsets sold in the third quarter of 2005. Three of the company's cell phones, including the ultra-thin Razr, were among the five top-selling models. The others were the V551 and V180.

iPod Cases - Cingular Discounts ROKR iTunes Phone

Cingular last week quietly dropped the price of Motorola's ROKR iTunes phone by nearly 40 percent, possibly indicating that reports of disappointing sales may be accurate. The price for the music-enabled phone alongside a two-year contract with Cingular was lowered from $249.99 to $149.99 USD.

According to analysts, sales may be meeting expectations, but customers are not happy with the ROKR. A research note released by financial analyst firm Piper Jaffray in October indicated that the return rates for the phone were unusually high. In the last three weeks of the third quarter, Cingular sold only 250,000 ROKRs; however, it's unclear how many of those phones were returned.

Belkin to offer new TuneFM, TuneBase

Belkin Corp. on Wednesday revealed plans to offer new TuneBase FM and TuneFM accessories for Apple’s fifth-generation iPods and iPod nano models. The new devices are expected to debut at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in January, and will hit store shelves in January as well.

The TuneFM provides the ability for iPods and iPod nanos to transmit audio to a nearby FM receiver. Available in two versions, one for iPod and one for iPod nano, the TuneFM connects through the dock connector, and uses the iPod or iPod nano’s own LCD display to show you the frequency it’s tuned to. In an effort to improve both customer satisfaction and the quality of its music players, Apple for a limited time will replace any fifth-generation iPod (video) player that exhibit signs of hardware failure, with little-to-no questions asked.

In a message to its channel partners this week, the iPod maker told authorized service providers to replace fifth-generation iPod products that exhibit "any type of hardware failure," including "those that would normally be classified as abuse."

"For a short period of time, Apple will be evaluating all forms of hardware failure on the recently announced fifth-generation iPod," the company said. Nowhere in the message did Apple indicate that there were any known or serious issues currently effecting the players. Instead, the company's move appears to be a preemptive measure. Full Story
